Pizza Types

There are many types of pizza, not just your standard pepperoni pizza.

Pizza Marinara (Early 18th Century)

Often cited as one of the oldest, this was created by fishermen's wives (the marinara) for their husbands returning from the Bay of Naples. It was topped with tomato, garlic, oregano, and extra virgin olive oil.

Pizza Margherita (1889)

While tomato-based pizzas existed earlier, the iconic Margherita was created by baker Raffaele Esposito in 1889. According to legend, he made three varieties for Queen Margherita of Savoy to honor her visit to Naples. The favorite featured tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil to represent the red, white, and green colors of the Italian flag.

Hawaiian Pizza (1962)

Hawaiian pizza was created in 1962 by Greek immigrant Sam Panopoulos at his Satellite Restaurant in Ontario, Canada. Seeking to break the monotony of standard pizza toppings, he combined sweet canned pineapple with savory ham, inspired by the sweet-and-sour flavor profiles found in Canadian Chinese cuisine.
